Last week, as part of Archtober, WATG and Wimberly Interiors asked leading architects and designers to put their building skills to the test at NYC’s second Great Architectural Bake-Off. Teams from 10 esteemed architecture firms gathered at the Center for Architecture, where they were given three hours to construct a cake. Some chose to recreate a structure of their own design, while other groups paid homage to an architectural landmark they admire. All teams used edible materials in thoughtful and creative ways, making use of solid sugar structural supports, metallic silver frosting, and more.
A team of judges, including Interior Design’s Allie Weiss, named Davis Brody Bond the winner of the competition with their depiction of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, a tribute to the firm’s late partner J. Max Bond Jr. The second place prize went to Dattner Architects, who designed a cake representing the Unisphere in Queens, New York. Other entries included the Beijing National Stadium by Grade New York and a retro McDonald’s outpost by H3 Hardy Collaboration.
